Highlights of our Northern Territory Trip

Highlights of our Northern Territory Trip

On our recent NT roadtrip, we got to see some fabulous sights like Obirr, Cooinda, Edith Falls, Katherine, Florence Falls and Wangi Falls. You do need a Kakadu National Park pass to enter Kakadu so do that online before you go. Normally $45/adult. You need to be careful of fuel and where you can buy it as it is very limited within Kakadu.

Jumping Crocodile Cruise at Wak Wak

On the way into Kakadu from Darwin, you will go past these tours. We did the original tour which was better than I expected. We did an hour cruise on the river and it lived up to the photos. Really good tour and well worth the price of $35 each.

Jabiru

We just stayed here one night as our first night in Kakadu. Great camp ground there called Aurora Kakadu which had a great swimming pool. Jabiru has a service station which is where you need to top your car up with fuel as there is limited places within Kakadu to get fuel. There is a supermarket with limited supplies for any last minute purchases.

Obirr

We stayed at Merl Campground in an unpowered site. No office on site, however a ranger who lives in a caravan there will come knocking on your door to collect fees. $15 per person, per night. Cahill Crossing is a highlight at high tide as the crocs come to eat barramundi. The walk up to Obirr lookout for sunset was a highlight. Lots of aboriginal art on the way.

Cooinda

We stayed at Cooinda Lodge Campground which was fabulous with two swimming pools and a great restaurant. This was our base to do the Yellow River Cruise at sunrise which was fabulous.

Edith Falls

We exited Kakadu and went down to Edith Falls. Loved it there. The campground was great and they have a shop and cafe onsite. We had scones, jam and cream that were fabulous! The swimming hole is just beautiful and there is a walk you can do to the top pools for swimming as well.

Katherine

Some of the walks were closed when we were there but we did enjoy the Katherine Hot Springs. Large shopping area in Katherine to stock up on supplies from the supermarket and bottle shop. Limited hours for the bottle shops and you need photo id to buy anything- police were there manning the drive through at the bottle shop.

Adelaide River

Loved this little lunch stop. We had the freshest barramundi at Digger's Bistro. Definitely worth it to be there for lunch. We also visited the war cemetery which was excellent.

Litchfield National Park

I really enjoyed Litchfield. It has lots of short hikes up to 3kms which was ideal in the heat. Swimming holes everywhere for swimming. Florence Falls camp ground was unpowered but set up high so you got a nice breeze through. It has a steep walk down to the falls but well worth it! Wangi Falls was a lot busier and a beautiful swimming hole and I guess it is more popular as a flat short walk to the falls. After all the day tourists left, it was nice and peaceful.

Darwin

I had been to Darwin a few times before, but really enjoyed our stay. We happened to be there for the Street Art Festival which was a bonus. The Royal Flying Doctor Service at Stokes Hill Wharf was well worth a visit. It also incorporates the Bombing of Darwin Harbour as well. The Darwin Waterfront was a really good area that has lots of great restaurants, wave pool and swimming lagoon. If you stay in the city area, it is all within walking distance.
